LOCAL CONTEXT

The City of Canosa di Puglia, where the S. Giuseppe Institute is, and where the OLLA project is realised, is a little village at 55Km. far away from Bari. From the last statistics of the population, at 31st.of December 1999, there were 31533 units, which the 10% are  young people between 15 and 19 years old. The problems which involve the young people are also the causes of the social and cultural underdeveloped of that area:

  • the low learned level of instruction: the illiteracies, above 6 years old, are the 24,2%, while graduates are only the 2%;
  • lot’s of this young people interrupts  studies in the primary school (at 14 years old are 5,3% and at 15Years the 4,7%);
  • the 10,4% of them repeat the same class twice;
  • most of them don’t even start the secondary school;
  • there are no qualified people for the work market demand; there is a 17,1% of dole: the artisan firms employee 1281 workers, which is the 4,1% of the population. From a recent statistics is emerged that at the first three months of the year 1996,the unemployed young people were the 57,3%; the diverted under aged people, doped etc.

The OLLA project is trying to stem all this problems.
